Dr. Altounian received his bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience from the University of Southern California (USC) in 2010. Next, he obtained his Master of Science degree in Global Medicine from USC in 2011. He completed his medical training at Western University of Health Sciences with an additional year as a pre-doctoral teaching fellow in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine.
In 2016, Dr. Altounian completed his medical internship at Chino Valley Medical Center. His training provided him with a strong understanding of the structure and function relationship of the human body while solidifying his skills as an effective educator for medical students.
He then moved to Texas to complete his three-year medical training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Physiatry) at the University of Texas Health Science Center (UT Health) McGovern Medical school, located in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas. He served as a Chief Resident and Chief of Wellness of his residency program.
He learned the importance of a multifaceted approach to patients who had sustained traumatic injuries, which would, in turn, create mental, physical, and social challenges requiring both a patient and family-centered approach for rehabilitation. He recognized how pain manifested in the patient population resulting in suffering that affected all aspects of their rehabilitation.
After successfully completing his residency training, Dr. Altounian moved back to his hometown, Los Angeles, where he completed an ACGME-accredited pain medicine fellowship at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) West Los Angeles VA program in 2021.
He is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the Spine Intervention Society, the American Academy of Pain Medicine, and the Armenian American Medical Society. Also, he has multiple publications in various journals and case presentations at Physiatry and Pain Management conferences throughout the country.
Dr. Altounian strives to provide patients with numerous pharmacological, non-pharmacological, and interventional treatment options for musculoskeletal diseases, spinal disorders, and other pain conditions.
His clinical experiences include a full scope of interventional pain procedures for spine care, ultrasound-guided peripheral joint injections, trigger point injections, radiofrequency neurolysis, neuromodulation, and EMG/NCS for peripheral neuropathy and radiculopathy among other treatments as part of a comprehensive pain management program.
Dr. Altounian is passionate about motivating patients on their journey to physical and emotional well-being while championing collaboration in a multidisciplinary approach to pain management. He appreciates the value of pain medicine and its impact on overall function and quality of life.
As a native to Southern California, he strives to give back to his community and provide his patients with the best care possible. Dr. Altounian is welcoming new patients. Please call the office to schedule an appointment.
