Treating Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow)

What is Lateral Epicondylitis?

Lateral epicondylitis, or tennis elbow, is a painful condition of the elbow caused by overuse. Tennis elbow is an inflammation of the tendons that join the forearm muscles on the outside of the elbow. The forearm muscles and tendons become damaged from overuse — repeating the same motions again and again. This leads to pain and tenderness on the outside of the elbow.

Not surprisingly, playing tennis or other racquet sports can cause this condition. However, any repetitive motion can lead to tennis elbow, such as typing, weight lifting, painting, carpentry, raking, and other actions. If you believe you are suffering from tennis elbow, be sure to contact our pain relief doctor, Payam Vahedifar, M.D., to discuss your symptoms.

How is Lateral Epicodylitis Treated?

Over time, continually repetitive motions can strain the muscles and put stress on the tendons. This means that treatment plans will need to address these areas of pain and work to not only relieve them of tenderness, but also work towards a health recovery. In most simple cases, the elbow just needs a break from activity in order to heal. In more severe cases, additional treatment approaches may be needed, such as injections.

There are many common treatment options for tennis elbow, such as the following:

  • Physical therapy
  • Medication
  • Tennis elbow braces
  • Icing and resting the elbow

Once conservative treatments have failed, more aggressive treatments involving topical medications, cortisone injections, or even PRP injections can be used. If all else fails, non-surgical options remain such as tenotomy. When you come to our center, we can walk you through your options and help you create a plan that meets your goals and addresses your concerns.
